Every year, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQI+ rights. This year’s theme, “No One Left Behind,” emphasizes the critical need for a world that celebrates diversity and guarantees equality, freedom, and justice for all.
While recent years have seen progress towards LGBTQI+ inclusion, significant challenges remain. The LGBTQI+ community continues to face marginalization and social exclusion. We, at YNCSD, are dedicated to fostering an inclusive future where these challenges are overcome.
This International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) 2024, YNCSD is proud to highlight our Project – LINKS- Advancing abortion rights and creating lasting gains for reproductive health, rights, and justice funded by Global Funds for Women. This project is specifically aimed at advancing the inclusion of the LGBTQI+ community, particularly Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer (LBQ) women and Sex Workers (FSWs), in the realm of sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). Our project tackles the critical issue of safe abortion access for LBQ women and FSWs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This marginalized group often faces unique barriers in obtaining safe abortion services, leading to a higher risk of unsafe procedures and mortality. Through this initiative, YNCSD continues to achieve the following; Improved Access and Uptake of Self-Managed Abortion, Reduced Mortality from Unsafe Abortions, Enhanced SRHR Knowledge, Improved Access to Care
This project embodies YNCSD’s core principles of promoting awareness and agency, ensuring access to resources and services, and advocating for a positive shift in social norms and practices that contribute to the marginalization of these communities.
Our vision is a world where:
- The Law Protects Everyone: We stand firmly against discriminatory laws and policies based on sexual orientation and gender identity. A just society requires equal rights.
- Safe Spaces Foster Belonging: Creating safe havens is crucial for LGBTQI+ well-being. We strive to establish safe spaces in schools, workplaces, and communities, where everyone feels welcome, respected, and free to be themselves.
- Amplified Voices Shape a More Inclusive Future: Empowering LGBTQI+ individuals is essential. We support them in sharing their experiences, advocating for themselves, and becoming leaders who shape a future where all are included.
This fight for equality demands a collective effort. You can contribute in these ways:
- Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power. Combat prejudice by actively learning about the LGBTQI+ community and the challenges they face.
- Challenge Discrimination: Don’t be a bystander. Speak out against homophobic and transphobic rhetoric, whether it occurs in your circle or the broader world. Challenge assumptions and promote understanding.
- Celebrate Diversity: Show your support by attending LGBTQI+ events, amplifying LGBTQI+ voices on social media, and embracing diversity in your daily interactions. Every act of inclusion, big or small, contributes to a more just and equitable society.
Together, we have the power to build a brighter future where everyone feels a sense of belonging, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This IDAHOBIT, let’s commit to leaving no one behind and create a world where every individual can reach their full potential.
