Youth participation in governance is critical to ensuring inclusive decision-making and sustainable development. However, many young people lack the necessary skills and knowledge to hold political officeholders accountable and participate effectively in the governance process. To address this gap, the Youth Governance and Accountability Track Program (YGAT) aims to equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to hold elected officials accountable and participate actively in governance.

Objectives:

The YGAT program aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to hold elected officials accountable and participate in governance actively.

  2. To build an understanding of governance and inclusion among young people

  3. To promote youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.

Approach:

The YGAT program will adopt a multi-pronged approach to achieve its objectives, including the following:

  1. Training and Capacity Building: The program will provide training and capacity-building opportunities to young people on governance, accountability, and inclusion. This will include training on political processes, policy analysis, advocacy, and communication skills.

  2. Mentorship and Coaching: The program will provide mentorship and coaching to young people interested in pursuing a career in politics or governance. This will include pairing young people with experienced politicians or public servants who can provide guidance and support.

  3. Networking and Collaboration: The program will create opportunities for young people to network and collaborate and with political and government leaders. This will include organizing events, forums, and other activities that promote dialogue and engagement.

  4. Research and Analysis: The program will conduct research and analysis on youth governance and accountability issues. This will include tracking the performance of elected officials, analyzing policies and legislation, and conducting surveys and focus groups with young people.

Program Activities:

The YGAT program will include the following activities:

  1. Training workshops on governance, accountability, and inclusion.

  2. Mentorship and coaching sessions with experienced politicians or public servants.

  3. Networking events and forums with political and government leaders.

  4. Research and analysis on issues related to youth governance and accountability.

  5. Advocacy campaigns and initiatives to promote youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.

Target Beneficiaries:

The YGAT program will target young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who are interested in governance and politics. The program will prioritize the participation of young people from within the Abuja community.
